Background:

Dr. Mark J. Cunningham is a native of New London Connecticut.  He earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Dr. Cunningham completed his general surgery residency at Boston University Medical Center in 1997.  He then completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at USC in 2000.  Dr. Cunningham went into private practice for a year and was then recruited by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  Since his recruitment he has been very involved with the teaching of their residents, both in the operating room and clinical setting.  He is also a key participant in the interview process and selection of future residents.  Dr. Cunningham is Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program and Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program.  He chairs the Information Technology Advisory Group for USC Care Medical Group.  Dr. Cunningham has also been working with Intuitive Surgical in training of coronary artery bypass, thoracic surgery, mitral valve repair, and arrhythmia surgery using the DaVinci Robotic Surgical system.  He is also participating with Medtronic in minimally invasive cardiac surgery training, which is a national training course for aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement.
